Gaining Commercial success

Red Riding Whood is a reimagining of the fairy tale little red riding hood and is designed to give the player an insight into dementia and how it affects both sufferers and the people around them being a VR experience player immersion is at the forefront of the project.
but How will this project be able to go from student project to commercial success. To answer this we must look at previous Student games that became successful in this case 2007's 'Portal'.
In 2006, students at DigiPen University developed a game called “Narbacular Drop” and uploaded it to their website. The gameplay includes the player controlling a princess in a fantasy setting. The princess could project two interconnected portals on certain surfaces within the game. Then, the player must solve puzzles by placing these two portals around the environment in order to make progress. This base game would go on to become Valve hit title portal.

While gameplay remained largely the same, the setting and perspective of “Portal” are quite different from those of “Drop.” The camera of the game takes a first-person point of view, and the portal mechanic is portrayed through a large, futuristic firearm.
Although at first glance portal appears to be a fps game in which all to often the only goal it to destroy everything in your path, the game take a slower pace and is focused purely on puzzle solving the fps aspect is more a clever use of popular genre usage and is no doubt key to the success of the title.

With this we can surmise that commercial success can bee achieved through refinement a great Idea can be used as a base for creating a popular and successful title in the case of Red Riding Whood future refinement could see the title cover other common yet debilitating neurological diseases and I believe the market for this is wide open having over the past 10 years seen my own late grandfather go through dementia and seeing the impact it had on both himself and those around him both his children and his wife. I can understand the frustration, fear and sadness experienced by all parties and feel whole heartedly that any medium other than huge overly wordy and complicated medical journals that give some insight to the disease would be well received and greatly appreciated.
