Driving Statement.

The success of art is determined by whether or not the audience has received the author's message, so with that what is my message.

As the sun sets over the water an island can be seen in the distance. A lone eel swims through the wreckage of a sunken vessel and as night falls the ghosts of the ships crew light the lanterns to guide the ship though the darkness.

The story however in this case is not the driving statement of the piece the driving statement however is a feeling a sense of wonder, of fantasy and a connection with the afterlife.

Choosing to target a younger audience with this project is a new experience for me being my other projects are more focused on feelings of fear and the delight I get from scaring my audience through my projects.

hitting the mark of death and ghosts in a "fun" way lead me to referencing several children's films. Films such as "The Book of Life", and "The Haunted Mansion.

The Book of Life is an animated film from 2014 and follows Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart, embarks on an adventure that spans three fantastic worlds where he must face his greatest fears.

Throughout the film characters deal with death and more related to my project ghosts/ the afterlife. the opening scene for the film is set on 'Día de los Muertos' the day of the dead and is a celebration of death and afterlife. This celebration is full of color and music and dancing the color however was the main aspect of focus for me. Using bright colors in my scene by way of the coral colors adding these bright vibrant colours to the scene transforms what is a quite morbid subject into something a bit more fun and appropriate for my target audience. To that end I also added a red luminance to some of the pieces of coral to balance out the green of the lanterns.

The Haunted Mansion a disney film from 2003 starring Eddy Murphy whist targeted to a slightly older audience than the book of life still remains a children's film. The film a success due mostly of course to eddy murphy's comedy. had one factor that really stood out to me and that was the use of green lights to signify ghostly apparitions. And was a large factor in my decision to use green lighting aboard the ship.

Using these tried and true methods whist adding my own creative elements I hope my project will Wow a younger audience and be something fresh, new and not before seen on Yagan Tower.
