The simple answer is to incite fear in our audience to allow them to escape to this virtual world and test their nerve.

However fear is not the only emotion we wanted our players to feel albeit at the forefront, we also have the players feel some sense of compassion toward the killer, who has lost his daughter and is clearly hurt by it. This is delivered in multiple ways the most prominent being the voice acting having the killer mention "My angle used to read books" in the library and screaming to get out of his daughters room. The daughters room of course is another hint toward the pain he feels having lost his daughter amongst this house stained with blood, severed body parts and general uncleanliness lies this perfectly kept room left untouched as a painful reminder of what has been lost.

Dark souls 3 is a masterpiece of gaming and a great example of sympathy for the devil Throughout the game you are forced to fight these "Lords of cinder" to return them to their thrones in order to re-kindle the first flame. These lords however have all done this before sacrificing themselves for the world in order to keep the flame alive, the world however has turned dark decrepit and fallen to ruin. and upon seeing this the lords refuse to sacrifice themselves again, can you blame them. but who are they and how are we made to feel sympathetic toward them.

the abyss watchers-formerly the most powerful army in the world when we first meet them they are fighting and killing each other even throughout the fight they will attack not only the player but each other, this implies some form of sickness or mental illness brought on by years of battle.

Yhorm the giant- this huge man sits on his thrown next to the only weapon that can kill him waiting to die

Aldrich saint of the deep- this once saint has become deformed into a giant slug living is a lake of his own waste

Ludleth the exiled- A weak feeble bodied man, who wishes to protect his disabled brother

king Lothric- A small legless king who just accepts his fate to be sacrificed to the flame.

Now we defeat these bosses and are filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment because you know darksouls. however in the end we burn them again we have just force brocken beings shadows of what they once were into sacrifice for a world they didnt want to see saved who is the real bad guy here.

It is with this clash of emotions that "The Manor" will be successful the feelings of fear will end as soon as the game does but that thought in the back of your mind that sense of compassion the idea that where it not for this mans loss of his daughter would he have become the monster we now see.
